So it was recently brought to my attention by @suumunster that Paypal is now a partner with Epoch, which is an Internet billing site that allows adult, dating and porn websites.
I’m still digging into figuring out for sure if Patreon supporters can pledge using their Paypal accounts, but it’s looking hopeful.
I did a quick check to see if any porn sites were actually accepting paypal as a form of payment and lo and behold http://www.x-art.com/ has a popup saying NOW WITH PAYPAL
I’m checking directly with Patreon and Paypal to see if this exact situation is the case. Patreon support has gotten back to me saying they weren’t even aware that Paypal was now accepting NSFW transactions, but states that if they are, Patreon creators are more than welcome to allow their patrons to pledge using Paypal.
Once I hear from Paypal and can find where it states in their user agreement that these transactions are allowed, I will update.
If anyone else has any information on this feel free to share!
Update:
I’ve contacted Paypal multiple times and they refuse to comment on the situation. Their Acceptable Use Policy and FAQ regarding the matter have not been updated to reflect the current circumstances (the partnership with Epoch and porn sites allowing payment through Paypal).
There’s speculation that if the policy has changed, that Paypal just plain doesn’t want to advertise it and wont comment, but also wont intervene if they find people are using Paypal for the exchange of sexually explicit digital goods.
It’s pretty frustrating because if the policy has been updated then it would make life a lot easier for NSFW patreon people, commission artists, online SW and the like but alas, Paypal continues to be difficult.
If anyone else wants to dig into the situation, let me know.
