SCP-504 is a species of tomato physically and genetically identical to that of the typical commercially-grown tomato. It was recovered in [REDACTED], Kentucky after a woman reported to the police that her farmer husband had been “murdered by his lunch”. The Foundation is currently working to identify and destroy loose strains of SCP-504 in the surrounding commercial farming areas.
Just wanted to let you know that we’re putting the finishing touches on replies, and making sure they play nicely with everything else on this platform.
“Why did they go away? Why, staff, whyyyy?” Fair question. We had a gaggle of overlapping message-like systems—namely, asks, fan mail, reblogging with commentary, question posts (rare!), and, yes, replies. When we finally introduced actual instant messaging a couple months ago, we had a lot of untangling to do.
In order to make all these systems work together, we had to do some back-end retooling, which meant taking down replies for a bit. For longer than we expected. Sorry about that.
And we get it—replies fill a very particular need (and you were very clear about expressing that need). They’re a kind of super like. A way to fully express your feelings about a thing without expecting anything in response. A gift.
When they come back, they’ll be even better. People will be able to reply to your posts multiple times, and you’ll even be able to reply to your own posts. Simple changes, yes, but ones that open up lots of possibilities.
Best of all, we’ve laid the down the engineering and design groundwork for even more substantial improvements down the road. Replies will be able to develop side-by-side with messaging.
More to come, soon enough. We know you all miss replies. We hope you enjoy their imminent return.
You know what? Thanks for bringing back replies. I guess.
But have you never heard of development and staging servers? It’s a closed-private-only copy of the system where you can mess around and change all the things while you get a new feature or version ready.
THAT’S where you kill replies while you work on the new version. Then when the new version is running on Dev (or staging, whatever you prefer) and it’s all been TESTED and working – THEN you take it to the Production Server.
So yea, I understand your reasons, I’m glad you’re bringing in a better system – but next time, do it on the dev server where we won’t lose a key social feature for months while you mess around with the back end.
I’m coming to the conclusion that I’m just going to have to likely resign myself to the fact I’m incredibly likely to remain single my whole life.
The odds of my getting a partner with the combination of my work and my personal issues when it comes to emotional issues are just stacked too much against me.
Or “Mom Knight” which is what I kept calling it for most of the time I worked on this. This was my story for Valor, a fairy tale anthology I was in last year! It’s a really great book, and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it. You can purchase a copy here.
