I think this whole debacle stems from the unfortunate western conception that all kaiju movies are “Godzilla movies”. If Vigalondo and company had been a little more tactful in presenting their film as a kaiju story that stands apart as much as Gamera, Pacific Rim, and the like stand on their own and not literally a Godzilla movie, we probably wouldn’t be in this situation.

I hope they realize this, because I’d love to actually see the movie get made.

It looks like they were actually using stills from G14 in their promotional emails, which is… incredibly stupid. Whoever owns the rights to Mazinger Z probably has a case as well.
